“Flowers have spoken to me more than I can tell in written words. They are the hieroglyphics of angels, loved by all men for the beauty of their character.” – Lydia M. Child
Can you recall a memory when you were young picking dandelions, daisies, wild violets, or flowering clover, so excited to run into the house to give to your Mom, Nana, Aunt, or friend and awaiting their reaction to your gift of love? Or would you search the grass for that patch of clover to find the four leaf clover that would bring luck. Flowers and plants were for me, a way of experiencing love in nature. Their color, essence, smell, and touch seem to set off a vibration, shifting the energy into something magical that expanded my heart, creating a sense of deep peace, intoxication, and love. I remember spending hours with friends tying flowers of clover together to make necklaces or to wear atop our heads.
As I grew older, dates would bring me flowers as they knew it was a way into my heart. My whole world felt different when I was in the company of plants and flowers; they were dear friends. I started to find ways to meditate with a single flower and hear the message it held.
I later learned that flowers have their own language called “floriography” which has been around for centuries and was widely utilized during the Victorian era to convey a silent message and emotion that could not be spoken between two people. And it goes back to the Middle Ages where herbs, plants, and flowers had magical properties and symbolism that we still use today.
Different varieties of flowers and colors had different meanings. If you extended you right hand with a flower or bouquet, the answer would be Yes, from the left hand a No. An upright flower was a positive response, and reversed a negative. Certain varieties of flowers also had different meanings and secret messages when given. Tussie-mussies or nosegays, little flower bouquets, were designed with certain flowers in mind to send a message. There may be one flower in the center that could also be the focus for the message. There is a practice of christening a child with rose petals rather than water.
Carnations are the symbol of love, commitment, fascination, hope, and faithfulness. It’s botanical name is Dianthus Caryophyllus. A Pink Carnation symbolizes – I’ll never forget you, thank you, a woman’s love or a mother’s love. The Angels associated with the Carnation are Archangel Haniel and Jophiel, the Romance Angels. Haniel is associated with the planet Venus and she is the patron of beauty and grace. Archangel Jophiel can help us attract beauty into our lives and encourages us to go out in nature.
I chose the Two of Cups in the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot to pair with the pink carnation. Twos in the Tarot are about balance and choices. In Numerology its vibration is one of love, compassion, intuition and partnership. In this card the man and woman are raising their cups to make a toast to celebrate the start of a new love, attraction, or partnership in business. They are in the beginning stages of this relationship and hold great hope for the future.
Every week I indulge in a bouquet or a single flower to put on my desk or on my blessings alter to feel the love and messages they have to offer. They can change the vibration of a room. I experiment with flower essences or oils to amplify a particular energy I want to attract. Herbal tea is another way to bring the healing and restorative energy of flowers and plants into our bodies. Choosing my special blend or single flower is a sacred practice for my week. By putting a few drops of rose essential oil on the back of your neck, love will follow you wherever you go throughout your day. And placing a few drops on the bottom of your feet, helps you find love and joy throughout the day.
My mother had the gift of Clairgustance, the gift of smell, and I often smell her signature perfume and know she is nearby sending her love, thinking of me, or there to help answer a question I might have.
There is something so lovely about having fresh flowers around you. Even if you just find one, it brings beauty to everything that it surrounds. You may be attracted to the color, fragrance or the type of flower, as it raises the vibration around you. When you pick a flower, ask the plant for permission and thank them for their gift of love. I like to tie a ribbon or colored string with a bell just below where I made the cut on the plant as an offering.
In the summer, seemingly overnight, a patch of wild violets will bloom in the grass inviting me to sit for awhile enjoying their company. So leave room in your garden so the faeries can dance and listen closely in the early morning or evening and you will hear them singing.
What are you calling into your life and how do you want to feel? Flowers would love to be your helper. What flower or plant is your favorite and why? Does it remind you on a loved one that has moved on or transitioned? You might see a flower that catches your eye when taking a walk, at the farmers market, or a wild flower growing in the woods. Look up the meaning as that gives you a little something extra to connect to it. There may be specific flowers and plants you put in your garden for different reasons. And remember to ask it what message it has for you.
Flowers teach us about love and courage too. A flower blooms and does not have to call the bees to her, she attracts them with her sweetness and fragrance. Even in a crack in the sidewalk, a flower will find its way through which reminds us even in the hardest parts of life there is a way to bloom and love again.
“May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day.” An Irish Blessing
